VEGAS MYTHS RE-BUSTED: The Restaurant Atop the Landmark Hotel Revolved

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Vegas Myths Busted” publishes unexampled entries every Monday, with a fillip Flashback Fri edition. Today’s entry inwards our on-going serial publication originally ran on Jan. 27, 2023.

Despite the fond memories shared o'er the decades by many former visitors, and fifty-fifty some employees, the eatery atop the Landmark Hotel didn’t revolve. It was as stationary as the run aground 400 feet below it.

In fact, in that respect were two restaurants ringing the dome of the Space Needle-like structure, the Sunset Room and the Mandarin dialect Room, as intimately as a waiting room called Club 27, which would make made moving, 360-degree tabularize table service a shade complicated for the staff.

But this Las Vegas myth was pervasive plenty for a YouTube transmission channel called Landmark Hotel & Casino to tackle it inward 2021. The communication channel obtained the archetype blueprints for the tower. They present 32 steel backing beams connecting the dome’s main deuce floors, all on the circumference. They would hold impeded a moving political program past the windows, patch bathrooms prevented one further back.

The littler domed stadium on top out of the main dome, also known as the hotel’s 31st floor, housed a arcsecond lounge and trip the light fantastic toe social club called the SkyBar. Here, an obstructive stairwell and elevator are what made revolving impossible.

But, just now to follow certain, the YouTube transmission channel obtained original marketing materials and set newspaper reviews for all the Landmark restaurants and bars. As expected, none mentioned movement of any sort.

Memories doubtless conflated the Landmark restaurants with the Top of the World at the Strat, which revolves 360 degrees every 80 minutes. The Strat opened as the Stratosphere inwards 1996, sextet years after the Landmark closed, and a twelvemonth after its implosion.

For the 1996 picture show “Mars Attacks,” manager Tim Richard Burton barb footage of the Landmark’s 1995 implosion to simulate its wipeout inward an assault past Martians. In existent life, an earliest onrush on the iconic Vegas Strip complex body part had been planned and came within a few dozen feet of being carried out.

At 9:25 p.m. on Aug. 2, 1968, a small planer clipped and damaged the “L” signalize atop the dome, and then crashed into the Las Vegas Convention Center crossways the street. Only the pilot, Everett John Wayne Shaw, 39, died in the crash. According to a promissory note found at his apartment, the dash was a suicide, not an accident.

Shaw, an aeroplane mechanic who worked at Nevada’s Jean Airport, was inconsolable over the failure of his month-old marriage. So he stole a Cessna 180 belonging to Alan Little, a dealer at the Frontier Hotel, for his foreboding(a) mission.

Eyewitnesses reported that the skim pulled upward at the cobbler's last minute. This strongly suggests that Anna Howard Shaw had intended to crash it into the Landmark’s domed stadium but had a alteration of ticker and clipped the signal past mistake. The run sent him on a dying volute into the Convention Center’s roof.

In the end, it was an accident.

According to the way of life many people make told this story, Henry Wheeler Shaw chose the Landmark’s covered stadium because his wife planned to dine inward ane of the restaurants thither that evening, maybe with a lover, and he intended to read her/them come out with him.

That component part of the story wouldn’t get been possible, though. The Landmark didn’t opened to the public until almost a year later, on July 1, 1969.
