VEGAS MYTHS RE-BUSTED: Hunting for Bambi
EDITOR’S NOTE: “Vegas Myths Busted” publishes every Monday, with a bonus Flashback Fri edition. Today’s ledger entry inwards our on-going serial originally ran on June 26, 2023.
In July 2003, a video producer pulled a fast 1 on KLAS-TV/Las Vegas. He staged a safari inward which attractive immature women wearing sneakers, and aught else, were hunted with paintball guns past men who were said to get paid thousands of dollars for the experience.
Reporter LuAnne Sorrell program an on-scene study of a track down inwards progress, taking Michael Burdick for his word that the “Hunting for Bambi” receive was 100% legit. The story was picked upwardly past CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, and logical newspapers around the world.
The legal age of women have got a deep-seated fantasy … to be sought after by a stranger,” Burdick told FOX, which also interviewed a “Bambi” who gave her identify only when as Taylor. She claimed, “We’re non getting bruise that bad,” and that possible injuries are irrelevant from a legal standpoint, because “I know what I’m getting into.”
The women were supposedly paid $1,000 if they got run into with a paintball pellet and $2,500 if they didn’t.
If that’s around as a great deal misogyny as you can buoy stomach today, perhaps you should block reading and stop out another of late busted myth instead. (How about this I near Celine Dion helicoptering to and from Caesars Palace?)
HuntingForBambi.com advertised that hunters would follow flown to Las Vegas and granted the opportunity to take 'tween a carte du jour of 30 defenseless women to “chase down pat(p) and pullulate same dogs.”
“This is the gift for the soul who thought he had it all,” the website proclaimed.
See? Told you. But you didn’t want to show most Celine instead.
Paying Deerly
The pull someone's leg was a publicity stunt designed to sell the horrifically distasteful softcore videos Burdick produced of his staged hunts. The website perpetuated the myth that these hunts were real, but charged $10K for the experiences to discourage any factual bookings. In showcase the high cost didn’t stoppage someone, the website couldn’t actually take course credit identity card charges inward that amount.
The women shown in the videos and intelligence stories were all actresses, and the men who supposedly paid to hunt club them were all friends or associates of Burdick’s. One was George III Evanthes, proprietor of a Las Vegas-based adult picture maker called Tough Girl Productions.
The subsequent stories exposing “Hunting for Bambi” as a pull someone's leg didn’t acquire 1/100th of the subject exposure that the initial reports did. So, to the highest degree people who saw those reports noneffervescent mistily recall it as a Vegas thing that actually happened.
Hey, only when inwards Vegas, right?
Brass Eagle, a large paintball mathematical product manufacturer, even out grew interested sufficiency to come forth a military press give up stating that they “condemn this irresponsible activity.”
Bambi: The Reckoning
Hoaxing news producers isn’t illegal. However, obstructing justice, gift untrue selective information to police force officers, and conducting business organization without a licence are all misdemeanors and, a twelvemonth later, Burdick was dragged into a municipal courtroom by the urban center of Las Vegas on all these charges. (The only if business licence Burdick’s company held was for merchandising videos, not for operating a sexually oriented business organisation or running paintball games.)
“He was a rattling convincing con man, and the public has to cognise almost guys similar him – and then, when they’re caught, they become wimps,” Oscar Goodman, the former outlaw defensive measure attorney for the rout who was city manager at the time, told the Las Vegas Sun.
Burdick recognised a plea deal. He paid a $1,105 amercement and officially apologized. In exchange, the metropolis dropped its two obstructing justness charges. Then, Burdick disappeared.
These days, Burdick’s original “Hunting for Bambi” VHS tapes and DVDs sell for most $20 online, with almost no more collector’s markup at all. And Burdick? He serves as a producer for WWE, which is also quite a fitting.
